Problem statement
With the relaunch of the Essent and Energiedirect app, there was one product team responsible for all feature discovery and development in the app. With the energy crisis of 2022 in mind, a lot of new propositions and services were being developed to give customers more control and insight on their energy consumption. But the app structure was already at it’s limit, and there was no option to make it easily and logically accessible to customers.

Research
Making sure we created a navigation structure and information architecture that would sustain itself over the years. We mapped out all use cases across teams and projects, current and upcoming, within Essent. Based on that, we started to create and validate the first and second levels of the structure. Directly testing them with users and comparing them to variants. Based on those insights, we optimized and improved the navigation to create the full information architecture.
After having the structure tested and validated. We needed to create the screens and navigation patterns supporting this new structure. This was also tested live with actual customer and gave us some interesting insights, before creating the final screen for production.
Results
- A validated sitemap with 86% success rate on over a hundred use cases.
- Over 80% of surveyed customers were positive about the redesign
- Less than one percent of surveyed customers were strongly negative about the navigation
- Delivered a framework for new and upcoming services and propositions
